Welcome

There has never been a better time to be a Labor woman.

Julia Gillard is leading the way as our country’s first woman Prime Minister and with a dedicated team behind her we are seeing amazing inroads in achieving true equality for women.

The creation of a historic Paid Parental Scheme, changes to improve women’s retirement savings and replacing the draconian workplace laws with those which restore fairness to workers are all tangible examples of the ALP working towards improving women’s lives in Australia.

The National Labor Women's Network is the official body representing all women members of the Australian Labor Party.

The Network believes that encouraging women to participate in all levels of the Party's structure, the government and public life is the best way to achieve policy outcomes that reflect the needs of women in the Australian community.

We provide advice on policy issues at state and national levels, and represent the Australian Labor Party in international women's forums. We work with our state Labor women organisations to increase the number of women active in the Labor Party and support the development of skills that assist women to participate in the Party at all levels.

We sponsor training, mentoring and political work experiences, as well as organising informal social networking events.

Please contact a member of our Executive in your State to find out more about how you can become involved in the National Labor Women’s Network.

Women's Budget Statement 2011-12

Minister Kate Ellis has released the Women's Budget Statement 2011-12 which aims at ensuring women and men have equal opportunity to participate in society.

Over the last four years, the Labor Government has been working hard to introduce practical supports to improve women's lives - including increasing families' choices through initiatives such as additional child care benefits and paid parental leave. The Gillard Labor Government has also boosted women's economic security through the introduction of the Fair Work Act 2009 and superannuation reforms.

This year, they have delivered ground breaking reforms to reduce domestic and family violence and improve the otucomes for women in the workplace.

Most Australian women want the choice to pursue paid employment and be active members of their families, at a range of different points in their lives. Many men today also want to play a greater role in raising children than in earlier generations.

The Gillard Government believes that families should be supported in making their own choices about combining work and family.

Measures in the Federal Budget 2011-12 represent significant steps in advancing gender equality in this country, to the benefit of all Australians.

Pricing Carbon

Prime Minister Pricing carbon is the right thing to do, it is an essential economic reform. Australians are the biggest polluters per capita in the developed world. Our climate is changing - we need to reduce carbon pollution now. If we delay pricing carbon now, we risk losing the jobs of the future and threaten our long term prosperity. This is the best way to stop businesses polluting and get them to invest in clean energy. Now is our time to build a clean energy future.

Julia Gillard
Prime Minister of Australia
